Who are we?
 The Hostelling International movement was born due to an idea of an elementary school teacher in Germany in the year 1908. He used to teach in town where the mining industry was its main activity, and he started planning field excursions as he was worried about the health of his students. During that time there were no hostels, so they had to stay in schools that were left empty during the weekends and holidays. These journeys got so popular that the first permanent hostel was opened in 1909. Nowadays, this place is a castle and it is still working as a hostel. In the `20s this idea spread all over Europe and between the `30s and the `50s it spread to the rest of the world. In Argentina, this activity started in 1953.
Hostelling International counts with almost 4200 hostels in 80 countries in Europe, America, Asia, Africa and the Pacific, with the aim of offering a lodging option based on service and quality.
Hostelling International has a philosophy that is its Basic principle and clearly shows the objective of the organisation. It is indeed quite simple and clear, and we would like to share it with you:
- Everyone is welcome
- We are a non-lucrative organisation
- Youth is our main focus
- We educate by giving the example
- We promote a better understanding between national and international travellers
- We encourage people to conserve the natural environment
Our mission is also very clear and described in the second article of our Constitution: `To promote education of youngsters from all over the world, but especially of the ones with limited resources, encouraging a higher knowledge, affection and care of nature and the appreciation of cultural values of cities, both big and small ones, from the whole world, and in order to accomplish this, offer hostels or other sort of lodging facility where there is no discrimination for race, nationality, religion, sex, social class or political opinions, so people can better understand each other in their own countries as well as in foreign lands`.
 Hostelling International is also an organisation recognised by UNESCO.
Hostelling International Argentina is an independent organisation that doesn’t receive any kina of funding from the government and it subsists from its members´ contribution and the activities that it organises.
