Trevelin
Trevelin is a pretty mountain town 22 km from Esquel, located in the fertile valley of the Andes in the province of Chubut, which was colonised by Welsh settlers at the end of the 19th century. It is surrounded by exuberant forests of cypress trees and lengas, the Futaleufù River, the lakes of the Los Alerces National Park and an aboriginal colony at Rosario Lake. The word Trevelin means Town of the Windmill.
You can see the beauty of this area in all the flowers and ancient forests of cypress trees and coihues, and the raspberries, cherries and strawberries that are planted traditionally, and the trout in its streams. Trevelin is an ideal start point to go to the mountains where you can rest and be in direct contact with nature. The area is perfect for tourism and different activities, and it is one of the very few Andean towns that also have cultural and historical significance as result of the Welsh colonisation. There are an important number of descendants of those settlers who still keep their language and traditions. There is also a typical Welsh celebration every 28th of July, with performances related to these Welsh settlers.
When you arrive to Trevelin you will be able to enjoy the traditional Welsh pastries and to try different homemade European delicatessen: Welsh tea, classic black cake, breads, scones, as well as delicious candy produced with regional fruits. Besides the traditional Welsh teahouses, Trevelin counts with other attractions such as the Bethel Chapel of Welsh style and the Regional Museum, living testimony of the history of this place.
